Journey to our new building

Over its three decade existence, New Vista High School has found a way to be innovative and bold in the places that it has been planted. Finally, in January 2025, the school moved to a beautiful, modern facility, built specifically to meet its unique programming.

The need for a new home

Beginning in 2003, New Vista High School called the old Baseline Junior High/Baseline Middle School building home. The building, which was originally designed for younger students and a mid 20th-Century approach to education, was already 50 years old when the school moved in.

By 2014, the building was really showing its age, and a bond-funded capital improvement program passed by voters that year included an extensive scope of work to address significant issues in the then 61-year-old building. However, by 2020, before the renovation project was initiated, structural issues had developed to a point where it was worth considering whether to move forward with a substantial investment in the building or consider other options.

The Board of Education formed the New Vista Working Group to discuss the path forward for New Vista and make a recommendation. The group, which was composed of school staff, parents, students, and community members, considered several options including proceeding with the extensive renovation, building a new building on the same site or building new on a different site. Ultimately, the group concluded that it would make the most sense to build a new building on the same site rather than continue to invest in a worn-out, out-dated building.

Voters show their support

In August 2022, the BVSD Board of Education referred the matter to voters, as part of Ballot Initiative 5A, which asked for a $350M bond that would include the funds needed for New Vista's new building.

In November 2022, they overwhelmingly supported the measure, with 67% voting YES.

Groundbreaking

BVSD wasted no time getting construction underway on the new building as quickly as possible, with Adolfson & Peterson leading construction of the school designed by MOA Architecture. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in August 2023 and construction began!

The building took shape quickly

Placement of a steel beam marking the mid-point of construction of the building structure happened in February 2024. New Vista students had the opportunity to sign it before it was hoisted to the top of the building, as dignitaries watched during the traditional topping off ceremony.

Saying goodbye

In December 2024, students, staff and community members were welcomed back to the Baseline campus to say goodbye to the 71-year-old building. Attendees toured the school, sharing their memories of their time in the historical building. Demolition is scheduled for Spring 2025.

Welcoming students to the new building

Over Winter Break 2024, construction teams worked to finish the last touches, while New Vista and BVSD staff worked tireleslly to move everything to the new building.

On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, the red carpet was rolled out and New Vista's students were welcomed to their new building!
